FRESHMAN YEAR: FALL 2020
The summer before my freshman year I received an email inviting me to apply to be a part of the Mentor Power for Success program - which would pair me with an upperclassman to help me successfully transition into university life. I was paired with Ellie who gave me study tips, advice, motivation, and guidance. With my freshman year being completely remote and I was a first-generation college student I needed the guidance and this program helped me succeed. |
JUNIOR YEAR: FALL 2022
With classes beginning to transition back to in person I wanted to be able to help other first generation students be successful at UW. I wanted to help guide others in the same way my mentor guided me. Attached is my reflection paper on my experience. Comments: Thanks for your thoughtful response, especially reflecting on your own identities and past role as a protegee and how that impacts your role as a mentor! We really appreciated having you as a mentor this quarter |

SENIOR YEAR FALL 2023: Experiential Learning
I returned to MPFS for my last year here at the University of Washington. This program has helped me succeed and gave me the opportunity to help others as well. This program will forever be an experience I hold dearly. Comments: This is a great reflection! I enjoyed reading about everything you learned as a mentor, and especially liked your note about how your experiences being similar to those of your mentee showed how journeys are not always linear. HONORS FINAL EVALUATION: Anisa was a great mentor, and was very involved in the MPFS program this quarter. Her mentee, Wendy, even nominated her for Mentor of the Year, a testament to the excellent mentorship and leadership that Anisa provided throughout this program. |
Summer of 2022 I was accepted to be a part of a paid seven week internship for the Washington State Labor Council. The Union Summer program aims to educate, take action, and have on the job training. Over the summer I went to a staffing strike with the nurses from Seattle Children's Hospital, registered people to vote at the Capitol Hill Block Party, traveled to Wenatchee for the Annual Washington State Labor Council Conference, helped organize to support Patty Murray in reelections as she supports unions, and learn about the importance of unions for working class people.
This experience meant the world to me as it was an official "big girl" opportunity and I was proud to represent my community and family in my endeavours. |

The purpose of this program is to help students understand the intersectionality of their identities and leadership styles. Components of completing the certificate were to engage with social justice focused programming, participate in at least two community involvement events hosted by the ECC (Ethnic Cultural Center), and demonstrate leadership by pursuing a new leadership opportunity. As I address in my paper, I joined Unidas Seremos to fulfill this requirement.
Comments: I really appreciate your thoughtful reflection Anisa, especially your growing confidence in your own definition of leadership even if it doesn't mirror others'. It's been great to see you grow as a leader and contributor to campus. |
I had been interested in joining Unidas Seremos since the beginning of my junior year. However, due to scheduling issues, I was never really able to attend. When I was completing my Diversity Leadership Certificate I had the external motivation to get involved with Unidas Seremos, and after only being a member for one quarter - I ran for the position of Community Service Coordinator and won.
Unidas Seremos is an organization dedicated to uplift women of color, especially Latinas. We host fundraisers, social events, and community service events. Unidas Seremos was one of my first introductions to Latino RSO'S and organizations on campus, a community that I didn't know existed until I joined. Finding my community on campus introduced me to my friends who turned to family, but gave me support in our shared experiences and struggles. |
FRIENDS PLACE ON NATIONAL LEGISLATION SPRING LOBBY WEEKEND 2023 AT WASHINGTON D.C. In March of 2023, I had the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. to advocate and lobby on a bill that would increase funding for community resources specific to violence prevention programs. While this experience was not my first time lobbying and advocating it was my first time traveling to D.C. to do so. In this opportunity, I led the conversation our group had with Maria Cantwell. I was intimidated and afraid that I wouldn't be able to take on such a big task. With the support of my peers and friends I did lead the conversation, even being complimented on my speaking skills by Maria Cantwell. It was an honor to represent my community and family, especially to make my family proud. |
FCNL: FRIENDS PLACE FLY-IN - OCTOBER 2023
For the Friends Place Fly-In we met to organize, lobby, and advocate for an investment in humane and sustainable migration practices. This means discontinuing the use of detention centers and redirecting funds to community-based programs aimed at helping transition refugees and asylum seekers to living in the States. I was most passionate about advocating for this bill, as my parents are immigrants and following the Trump presidency there was an increase in violence and death at the borders, with the recent employment of razor buoys. |
